Il Redentore was built by Palladio after the Great Plague ravaged Venice. It stands on the island of Giudecca, opposite the west side of Venice's 6 'sestieri', or 'districts'. In this image it is shrouded in colour as the winter sun sets to the right, bringing to mind the strikingly coloured images of Venice that Turner was to paint during his later visits.
